This paper outlines a novel approximate model for determining the pressure drop of laminar, singlephase flow in slowly-varying microchannels of arbitrary cross-section based on the solution of a channel of elliptical cross-section. A new nondimensional parameter is introduced as a criterion to identify the significance of frictional and inertial effects. This criterion is a function of the Reynolds number and geometrical parameters of the cross-section; i.e., perimeter, area, cross-sectional polar moment of inertia, and channel length. It is shown that for the general case of arbitrary cross-section, the cross-sectional perimeter is a more suitable length scale. An experimental investigation is conducted to verify the present model; 5 sets of rectangular microchannels with converging–diverging linear wall profiles are fabricated and tested. The collected pressure drop data are shown to be in good agreement with the proposed model. Furthermore, the presented model is compared with the numerical and experimental data available in the literature for a hyperbolic contraction with rectangular cross-section. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The Effect of Viscous Dissipation and Variable Properties on Nanofluids Flow in Two Dimensional Microchannels

Laminar two dimensional forced convective heat transfer of Al2O3 –water nanofluid in a horizontal microchannel has been studied numerically, considering axial conduction, viscous dissipation and variable properties effects. The existing criteria in the literature for considering viscous dissipation in energy equation are compared for different cases and the most proper one is applied for the re...

Analytical and Experimental Characterization of Flow in Slowly-Varying Cross-section Microchannels

This paper outlines a novel approximate solution for determining the pressure drop of laminar, single-phase flow in slowly-varying microchannels of arbitrary cross-section. The proposed analysis is general and applicable to symmetric and asymmetric microchannel cross-sections, as examples compact relationships are reported for elliptical and rectangular shapes for three common wall profiles of ...

Pressure Drop of Fully-developed, Laminar Flow in Microchannels of Arbitrary Cross-section

Pressure drop of fully developed, laminar, incompressible flow in smooth mini and microchannels of arbitrary cross-section is investigated. A compact approximate model is proposed that predicts the pressure drop for a wide variety of shapes. The model is only a function of geometrical parameters of the cross-section, i.e., area, perimeter, and polar moment of inertia. The proposed model is comp...

An approximate model for slug flow heat transfer in channels of arbitrary cross section

In this paper, a novel approximate solution to determine the Nusselt number for thermally developed, slug (low-prandtl), laminar, single phase flow in channels of arbitrary cross section is presented. Using the Saint-Venant principle in torsion of beams, it is shown that the thermally developed Nusselt number for low-prandtl flow is only a function of the geometrical parameters of the channel c...

Flow in Slowly Varying Microchannels of Rectangular Cross-section

Copyright ©2009 by ASME ABSTRACT Laminar fully developed flow in streamwise-periodic microchannels of rectangular cross-section has been studied in this work. Based on the lubrication approximation, an analytical approach is proposed for the frictional flow resistance. Using the analytical model developed for straight channels of arbitrary cross-section, compact models are developed for linear ...
